Proposal
for uMariya uMama weThemba Monastery and Church in Grahamstown, South
Africa. The extensive design program for the Monastery is for 10 monks
and staff. The church is large enough for 150 people, monks, guests,
and many local children. The monastery is based on the traditional
life of a Benedictine Monastery and the buildings support that tradition
of community. The church refers to the African Rondavel in its circular
form but maintains a minimalist vocabulary, utilizing local materials
of stone and stucco.
